New Zuni Fetishes this week

I'm in the midst of working on the next posting of new fetishes to the site and should have it ready within 24 hours. This is a small group of 13 fetishes by Andres QUANDELACY, Elton KAAMASEE, Chad QUANDELACY, Leland BOONE, Brion HATTIE, Stewart QUANDELACY, Lance CHEAMA, Michael LAWEKA, Emery ERIACHO, Randy LUCIO, Lena BOONE, Rosella SHACK & Jayne QUAM.

Some of the stones include: Turquoise, antler, dolomite, dumorterite, gold-lipped Mother of Pearl, Malachite, Fossil Marble and onyx. You'll see bears (of course!), moles, mice, maidens, mountain lions, rabbits and an adorable PIG. So stay tuned .. new stuff in just a bit!

New arrivals from Burt Awelagte!

Yesterday a shipment arrived from Burt Awelagte. Burt is the nephew of Gibbs, cousin of Jeff and Brion, and he carves a variety of animals in a very sweet and whimsical style. He's sent us a variety of animals in colorful stones so look for his work in upcoming showings.

I'd like to thank Burt for sharing his talent with us!

News from Zuni Spirits

Very sad news:
Earlier this week we were stunned and saddened to learn of the passing of another of Zuni's talented young men. Jeffrey Tsalabutie, along with another young man, was killed in an automobile accident . What a tremendous loss this is to his family, his community and to those of us who found his work to be spectacular. Please keep his family in your prayers.

New Zuni Fetishes @ Zunispirits.com

Our second posting of June is now up and running. We have nine Zuni fetishes by Manuel Weahkee. Manuel is the only fulltime carver in his family at present. Both of the boys, Daniel and Nathaniel have taken jobs in the local oil industry and now only carve in their spare time. Daughter Danielle carves from time to time as well but being a typical teenager takes up most of her time and attention! There are some grandsons coming up the ranks and their work will be shown at the Santa Fe Indian market in August along with work by the other members of the Manuel Weahkee family.

Well, after much delay and distraction we have finally updated Zunispirits.com with some new fetishes. The Zuni fetishes that recently arrived are fresh, innovative and remarkably well carved.

We've heard from Zuni that the news there is just as bleak as elsewhere in the nation. When money gets tight, buying artwork certainly becomes less of an option for most of us. And, since Zuni relies heavily on the sale of puebloan art whether it's fetishes, pottery, paintings or jewelry, times are especially tough there.

Dave and I appreciate all the support Zunispirits.com has received during this tough financial time. We know there are lots of places your money could go and we're grateful that (thanks to you!) Zunispirits.com continues to perservere! Manuel WEAHKEE Show coming up!

Manuel Weahkee has sent us a shipment of wonderful new carvings. He is now the lone carver in the family. Memorial Day

Today I received this email from a friend in Zuni. Though it's directed at the citizens of New Mexico, Congress is asking for a moment of silence throughout the nation at 3 PM on Memorial Day. Sure we love our barbeques and swim parties, our holiday weekends on the boat or at the beach ... but how many of us really stop to think what this holiday is really all about?. Do that. Stop and think. Say a quiet prayer of gratitude to all who have given their lives so that we can live the lives of freedom we enjoy. Happy Memorial Day. Be safe!

New Mexicans Urged to Observe Moment of Silence on Memorial Day Monday, May 25th (3pm) (SANTA FE)-New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Cabinet Secretary John M. Garcia is asking all New Mexicans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3pm on Memorial Day--to honor the servicemen and women who’ve lost their lives serving our country. The United States Congress designated this one-minute moment of silence at 3pm local time nationwide--a time when many Americans are enjoying their freedom on this national holiday. It’s not intended to replace traditional Memorial Day observances, but rather as a national moment of unity for people to pause during the day’s typical picnics, barbecues and gatherings to remember our fallen soldiers. “Memorial Day shouldn’t be just about having a three-day weekend, or for marking the beginning of summer,” said Garcia. “This moment of silence is a chance to reclaim this special day--even if only for a brief moment--for the noble and sacred reason for which it is really intended: To honor the brave men and women who’ve died while serving our country.” Garcia is also asking radio stations to play The Star Spangled Banner or any other patriotic music at 3pm on Monday to help New Mexicans observe this National Moment of Remembrance.

HI Darlene & David,

My name is Heather Guay and I am the director of volunteers for the Madhav Ghimire Foundation! I went on the recent trip to Nepal to visit the scholarship girls and present them with their scholarships, school supplies,and their Zuni Spirits fetishes.

The Nepalese people are very spiritual and as you may know, they have many gods and many different beliefs and customs about spirits and gods...I was a bit nervous as to how they may perceive the fetishes at first....I did not know if they would think they were some "foreign" gods or something....I was thrilled when I saw just how much they adored their fetish gifts! The girls handled them with exquisite care and they adored them. The other children in the villages at each school were intrigued with these fetishes as well and they gathered around to see them. I wondered what they were thinking as they viewed the beautiful little carved treasures.

I just wanted to let you know that your gifts were/are so appreciated. I wanted to share with you what I saw and experienced and how truly your gifts made a difference in lives far across the ocean! I will return this summer to teach English in several of our villages. I will look for the fetishes to find out how they are doing... :D

It's SPRING!

Today is a t-shirt and shorts day and I hate to say it because I know so many of you are still in down parkas and snowshoes! But it's true! Dave and I walked the loop to the gate and back up thru the meadow and the red bud, wild plums and trout lilies are blooming! Lots of the trees (elm, oak, sweet gum) are "blossoming" and the bees are feasting on all the pollen that will soon coat everything in a thick dust and make us all sneezy. Still sneezes are a small price to pay for such beauty, doncha think?

And now ....

the reason you are really here: New stuff tonight @ 7 PM (Texas Time) @ Zunispirits.com. It's no secret times are hard and folks are being very careful with their money. We completely understand. Still, we're going to continue posting new stuff and support the artists in Zuni as long as we are able. We hope that you will continue to stop by, take a look and from time to time, when the budget and your conscience allows, add a piece or two to your collection. It not only keeps the lights on here in Grapeland, Texas, it keeps the lights on in Zuniland, too. In the event things get really dicey, we might move the entire site over the blog (cause it's FREE) but we're crossing our fingers and our toes that it doesn't get that bad.

And thanks again

... for all the nice emails and well wishes for Dave. It's so nice to know that all you PEEPS care about the Davester. We're so thankful that we don't have to go down the yellow brick road for a while and that, for the time being at least .. the flying monkeys are not a threat. (Everybody knows all you have to do is throw water at the Wicked Witch .. but those monkeys are SKEERY!)

Heart Wiz Conquers the Wicked Witch AND the Flying Monkeys!

Our heart wiz doesn't have a handle-bar moustache or grey hair but he's surely a wizard to us! Seems that Dave just doesn't test well, ha! His heart cath revealed no treatment necessary and his stress test results were just a blip on the radar screen of life. We couldn't be happier!

We received a fistful of monkey defying, witch melting , well wishing emails and we can't thank you enough for your thoughts and prayers. Mwah and a big smooshy hug to each of you.

So I sez to the doc, "so Doc, tell me. Now Dave has NO EXCUSE and should get started right away on my hen house, right?" And the Doc sez, "that's right .. no excuse!" (You gotta love that doc!) Baby Chickies will be enroute to us late next month. Hen House Mansion Construction, Phase I begins next week. YAY!

So Now We're Actually Going To Do Some Work ...

... and post some new stuff to the site late next week. Hope you'll tune in on Friday, February 27th at 7 PM Texas Time.

The HEART Wizard that is

Dave, the Tin Man, has a heart but it's apparently all clogged up again. He flunked his recent stress test despite the fact he neither passed out OR fell off the treadmill. Apparently there are other standards of excellence required to pass a stress test ...
So we'll be out of the office for at least a couple of days while we travel to the Land of Oz, home of the Heart Cath Wizard. Please pray that we don't encounter any Wicked Witches or Flying Monkeys while we journey.

A small text box will appear that tells the carver, stone and price of that Zuni fetish. Of course, each image is also "clickable" and will open in it's own page so that you may view all the photos and full length text description as well. But the text over feature allows you to quickly go thru the new listings to see which of those you might be most interested in.

Here in the woods

we're still feeding the birds. The cardinals finally found us a couple of weeks ago. Before we moved up on the hill (about 300 yards) last spring we had lots and lots of cardinals. But they've only just now found us so I guess they've run out of their usual food sources (or maybe they heard we're serving SAFFLOWER seeds now!)

A dear collector in GA told us that adding safflower seeds to our bird seed mix discourages the squirrels since they hate the odor. Well that's true except for one squirrel we're calling "Jimmy Durante". He doesn't seem to mind the smell at all. Still, Elmer Fudd (aka Dave) isn't suffering from "varmit rage" nearly as bad and our BB supply is steady and holding.
